Read MoreThe best time to visit Kenya depends on what you want to see. The dry seasons (January-March and July-October) are ideal for game viewing, with animals congregating around water sources.
For the Masai Mara river crossings, plan between late July and October. This is when millions of wildebeest and zebra cross the Mara River from Tanzania's Serengeti.
April-May and November offer lush landscapes, fewer crowds, and lower prices, though afternoon showers are common.
June to October is Tanzania's best safari season. The Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater are at their best, with clear skies and excellent game viewing.
Tanzania hosts the migration year-round. December-March is calving season in the Southern Serengeti; June-July sees the western corridor river crossings.
January-February and November offer great value, fewer tourists, and still excellent wildlife sightings.
Pack neutral-colored (khaki, olive, brown) lightweight, breathable clothing. Avoid bright colors and white. Long sleeves and trousers protect against sun and insects. A warm fleece or jacket is essential for cold mornings. Comfortable walking shoes, a wide-brim hat, and sunglasses are must-haves.
Bring a camera with zoom lens, extra batteries, and plenty of memory cards. A power bank is useful for charging devices during long drives.
Sunscreen, insect repellent, malaria prophylaxis, hand sanitizer, and any personal medications. A basic first-aid kit is also recommended.
A tele zoom lens (70-200mm or 100-400mm) is the sweet spot for safari photography. Bring a camera bean bag for steady shots from a moving vehicle, and a dust-proof bag.
Early morning and late afternoon offer the best light. Animals are also most active during these times, so you'll double your chances of action shots.
Try eye-level shots when possible, include foreground interest, and don't be afraid of close-ups. Patience is your greatest tool.
Kenya offers a more compact safari circuit, excellent road infrastructure, and the Masai Mara's iconic river crossings. Domestic flights are frequent and affordable. Great for first-time safari-goers.
Tanzania's Northern Circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Manyara) offers more parks and longer itineraries. The Ngorongoro Crater is unique in the world. Great for repeat visitors seeking variety.
Kenya generally offers better value for mid-range budgets, while Tanzania has some of the most luxurious lodges in Africa.
Budget camps offer basic but comfortable rooms or tents with shared facilities. Great for adventure travelers who want more money for activities.
Mid-range lodges provide en-suite bathrooms, good food, and comfortable beds in stunning settings. Perfect for most safari-goers.
Luxury lodges and exclusive-use camps offer private guides, gourmet dining, plunge pools, and unrivalled wildlife viewing right from your room.
Choose accommodation inside or very close to the park gates to maximize game-drive time.
Most visitors can obtain an e-Visa online before travel. The East African Tourist Visa (valid for Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda) costs $100 and is valid for 90 days.
Visitors can apply for a tourist visa online or obtain one on arrival at major airports. The East African Tourist Visa is also accepted here.
Citizens of all countries can obtain a visa on arrival or apply online. East African residents may get a free 30-day visa.
Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel date. Carry printed visa confirmations.
Kenya uses the Kenyan Shilling (KES), Tanzania uses the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS), and Rwanda uses the Rwandan Franc (RWF). USD is widely accepted for tips and park fees.
Tipping is customary and expected. Good guidelines: $10-15 per person per day for driver-guides, $5-8 per day for camp staff, $3-5 per day for restaurant staff.
Major safari lodges accept credit cards, but cash is king for tips, small purchases, and remote camps. Carry small-dollar bills.
Yellow fever vaccination is required if arriving from an endemic country. Routine vaccines (MMR, hepatitis A, typhoid) are strongly recommended.
Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for most safari areas. Your doctor can advise on the best medication. Use insect repellent and mosquito nets.
Stick to bottled or filtered water. Avoid ice, raw salads, and street food where hygiene is questionable. Most lodges maintain excellent food safety standards.
Most safaris use 4x4 Land Cruisers or pop-top minibuses, either shared or private. Private vehicles offer more flexibility and are recommended for serious wildlife viewing.
Light aircraft flights connect Nairobi, Mombasa, and key safari airstrips in Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda. This saves time on long transfers.
Road conditions vary. Nairobi-Masai Mara takes 5-6 hours; Arusha-Serengeti takes 8-9 hours. Some parks are only accessible by charter flight.
