The Masai Mara is approximately 270 km from Nairobi, about 5-6 hours by road via the scenic Great Rift Valley. We use comfortable safari vehicles for the journey. Optional flights from Nairobi Wilson Airport to Mara airstrips are available (35 minutes, extra cost).
While more time is always better, two days allows for quality game drives and you can still see the Big Five with good luck. It's ideal for weekend trips or as part of a longer Kenya itinerary.
July to October offers the best chance to see the Great Migration river crossings. January to February is calving season with abundant predators. April to June offers lush landscapes and fewer crowds.
Pack neutral-colored clothing, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, comfortable shoes, a warm fleece for early mornings, and a camera with zoom lens. Binoculars are highly recommended.
